The Pipes of Christmas is proud to announce that John MacMillan, CEO of the Edinburgh-based charitable organization The Eric Liddell Community, will serve as the 2023 Pipes of Christmas Honorary Chair. The role of Honorary Chair is given to leaders in the arts, cultural, or charitable community in recognition of shared partnership, goals, and values.

Mr. MacMillan leads The Eric Liddell Community, an Edinburgh care charity and community hub founded in 1980, in memory of the inspirational Olympic gold medallist, Eric Liddell, whose win in the 1924 Paris Olympics was the subject of the film ‘Chariots of Fire’. Through its community support programs, The Eric Liddell Community brings people together in their local communities to enhance health and well-being and have a positive impact on their lives.

In advance of the centenary of Liddell’s Olympic win, MacMillan is spearheading The Eric Liddell 100, a programme of events and activities to recognise and celebrate the life, sporting and community service achievements of one of Scotland’s iconic figures. The Pipes of Christmas is proud to partner with the Eric Liddell Community to advance this important initiative.

“I am delighted to welcome you to the 2023 Pipes of Christmas as your Honorary Chair,” said Mr. MacMillan. “What better way to start the Christmas season than joining together with a global community through music to celebrate our shared culture and connections?”

Sue Caton, who is niece of Eric Liddell and a Patron of The Eric Liddell Community, said in a welcome letter to Pipes of Christmas concertgoers, “I, along with Eric’s daughters, am delighted to see the work that is underway to celebrate his life and achievements. From my home in Edinburgh, Scotland, I hope that you enjoy your evening of Celtic music and entertainment and wish you well for 2024.”

We thank Mr. MacMillan, Ms. Caton, and The Eric Liddell Community for their leadership and for joining us to celebrate the 2023 Pipes of Christmas!

Since its debut in 1999, The Pipes of Christmas has played to standing-room-only audiences. Now a cherished holiday event, the concert gives audiences a stirring and reverent celebration of the Christmas season and the Celtic spirit. Audience-goers return year after year to experience the program, many reporting that the Pipes of Christmas has become part of their family’s annual Christmas tradition.

The concert has been lavished with critical acclaim. In his review for Classical New Jersey Magazine, Paul Somers wrote, “The whole evening was constructed to introduce gem after gem and still have a finale which raised the roof. In short, it was like a well-constructed fireworks show on the Glorious Fourth.” The Westfield Leader described the concert as “a unique sound of power and glory nowhere else to be found.”
